A recent study published in the journal *Environmental Science & Technology Letters* has revealed an effective method to remove microplastics from drinking water. Researchers found that boiling tap water can significantly reduce the presence of microplastics, with the effectiveness increasing in harder water. The process works because when water is boiled, calcium carbonate in hard water forms a chalky residue that encapsulates the microplastics, allowing them to be filtered out. In tests, boiling water for five minutes removed up to 80% of microplastics in hard water and about 25% in soft water. This simple technique could be particularly beneficial in regions with high levels of water hardness, offering a cost-effective solution to reduce microplastic ingestion.
