  Every morning, a group gathers at a graveyard in Harare to exercise, using the wide paths for walking, stretching, and other workouts. The Commandos Fitness Club was started by Joseph Nekati after his mother suffered a stroke in 2023.


In Zimbabwe, a fitness club has transformed a local graveyard into a unique workout venue to promote health and combat the high incidence of non-communicable diseases like heart disease and diabetes. The initiative, led by fitness trainer Prince 'The Prince' Mpofu, uses the serene environment of the cemetery to encourage physical activity among community members, many of whom are deterred by the cost of gym memberships. This unconventional approach not only provides a free space for exercise but also aims to raise awareness about the importance of fitness in preventing premature death, symbolically juxtaposing life-affirming exercise with the resting place of the deceased. The club's activities include jogging, aerobics, and other exercises, all set against the backdrop of tombstones, making a poignant statement about the value of health and life.
