Is there a link between depression and menstrual pain? Study finds out

  • Women suffering from depression are more likely to experience menstrual pain (also known as dysmenorrhea), finds a study on Wednesday

A recent study published in the journal *JAMA Network Open* has explored the potential link between depression and menstrual pain, revealing that women experiencing severe menstrual pain are more likely to suffer from depression. The research, which involved over 1,000 participants, found that those with dysmenorrhea (painful periods) reported higher rates of depressive symptoms compared to those with less or no menstrual pain. This association held even after adjusting for factors like age, socioeconomic status, and other health conditions. The study suggests that the chronic pain associated with menstruation might contribute to the development or exacerbation of depression, highlighting the need for integrated health care approaches that address both mental and physical health in women. This could lead to better management strategies for women experiencing both conditions, potentially improving their overall quality of life.
