Exercise at medical fitness centres improving health for older adults, says U of M study
- A new study has found older adults who regularly attend medical fitness centres have better heart health and live longer.
A study from the University of Manitoba, published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, highlights the significant health benefits of exercise for older adults at medical fitness centres. The research, conducted by Dr. Brenda Rossow and her team, involved 115 participants aged 65 and older who engaged in regular exercise at facilities like the Reh-Fit Centre. The study found that these participants experienced improvements in physical function, reduced fall risk, and better management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The exercise programs, tailored to individual needs, included strength training, cardiovascular workouts, and balance exercises, demonstrating that structured fitness routines can enhance the quality of life for seniors, potentially reducing healthcare costs by preventing or delaying the need for medical interventions.
