This directive came after a 70-year-old prisoner, who has been in jail for 25 years, sought release on the grounds of his deteriorating health. The court emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that prisoners' health conditions are adequately considered in decisions regarding their release. The court also noted that the current system lacks specific guidelines for such assessments, which could lead to arbitrary decisions. The state has been given four weeks to formulate these criteria, highlighting the urgency and importance of addressing prisoners' health in legal proceedings.
