The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to formulate clear guidelines for determining the mental and physical fitness of prisoners, following concerns about the lack of established parameters for such assessments.

The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to establish criteria for assessing the mental and physical fitness of prisoners, particularly those who have served life sentences and are seeking premature release. This directive came after a 70-year-old prisoner, who has been in jail for 25 years, sought release on the grounds of his deteriorating health. The court emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that prisoners' health conditions are adequately considered in decisions regarding their release. The state has been given four weeks to formulate these criteria, highlighting the urgency and importance of addressing prisoners' health in legal proceedings.
