Exercise boosts memory for up to 24 hours after a workout - new research

  • In our study of middle-aged and older adults, we found that people who did more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (such as jogging or cycling) performed better on memory tests the following day. This suggests that the memory benefits of physical activity might last longer than the couple of hours found in previous, lab-based studies.

A recent study published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society has found that engaging in physical exercise can enhance memory function for up to 24 hours post-workout. Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, conducted experiments where participants either exercised or remained sedentary before performing memory tasks. The results indicated that those who exercised, particularly through moderate-intensity activities like cycling, showed improved memory performance compared to their non-exercising counterparts. This memory boost was observed not only immediately after the exercise but persisted for a full day. The study suggests that exercise might increase the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports neuron growth and cognitive functions, thereby enhancing memory consolidation and retrieval. This finding underscores the potential cognitive benefits of regular physical activity, suggesting that exercise could be a simple yet effective strategy for improving memory in both healthy individuals and those with memory impairments.
