People around the globe are living longer -- but not necessarily healthier -- lives, according to new research. A study of 183 World Health Organization (WHO) member countries found those additional years of life are increasingly fraught with disease.

The article from ScienceDaily discusses a study published in the journal Nature Communications, revealing that the Earth's inner core, previously thought to be a solid iron sphere, might actually have a different structure. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and collaborators used seismic waves from earthquakes to probe the core, finding evidence that suggests the inner core could be composed of a lattice-like structure with pockets of liquid iron. This finding challenges the long-held belief of a completely solid inner core and suggests that the core's composition and behavior are more complex than previously understood, potentially affecting our understanding of Earth's magnetic field generation and the planet's thermal history.
