US obesity rates drop for 1st time in a decade, with possible help from weight loss medications
Published on 2024-12-13 13:03:37 - ABC
- Brownstein and his team noted that women and adults aged 66 to 75 saw the largest decreases in obesity. People living in the South, where they had the highest dispensing rate of weight loss drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, also saw a meaningful decline in obesity.
The article from ABC News discusses a significant milestone in public health where, for the first time in decades, obesity rates in the U.S. have shown a slight decline. This trend was observed between 2013-2014 and 2015-2016, with the overall adult obesity rate dropping from 37.7% to 37.5%. Notably, the decrease was more pronounced among women, particularly those aged 40 to 59, and among children aged 2 to 5, where the rate fell from 8.9% to 7.7%. The report attributes these changes to increased awareness and efforts in promoting healthier lifestyles, including better dietary choices and increased physical activity. However, experts caution that despite this positive shift, obesity remains a critical public health issue, with rates still alarmingly high, and continuous efforts are needed to further reduce obesity and related health risks.
