  • VO2 max is a key metric for many reasons. New research shows that fitness level is more important than bodyweight when it comes to cardiovascular health and mortality. The meta-analysis found that higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels had significant benefits for health, no matter what BMI category participants fell into.

A recent study published in the *European Heart Journal* suggests that VO2 max, a measure of aerobic fitness, is a more reliable indicator of health than Body Mass Index (BMI). Researchers from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden analyzed data from over 2,000 individuals and found that VO2 max was inversely associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, as well as overall mortality. Unlike BMI, which only accounts for weight and height, VO2 max provides insight into cardiovascular health and metabolic function. The study highlights that even individuals with a higher BMI but good aerobic fitness had better health outcomes, suggesting that fitness levels should be considered alongside or even above BMI when assessing health risks.
