  Higher cardiorespiratory fitness in older age is linked to the preservation of several core aspects of cognitive ability that are vulnerable to age-related decline, finds research published


A study published in the *Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health* has found that maintaining high cardiorespiratory fitness in middle age can help preserve cognitive abilities as one ages. The research, which analyzed data from over 1,400 participants in the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program, showed that individuals with higher fitness levels at midlife exhibited better cognitive function in later years. Specifically, those with the highest fitness levels had a 16% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those with the lowest fitness levels. The study suggests that cardiorespiratory fitness could be a modifiable factor in preventing cognitive decline, highlighting the importance of physical activity throughout life to support brain health.
