Worried about dementia? Study says improve heart and lung health; here's why
- Higher cardiorespiratory fitness will not only improve physical health, but also delay the onset of dementia by 1.5 years, even with genetic cards at play.
A recent study published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia highlights the link between cardiovascular health and dementia risk, suggesting that improving heart and lung health could help prevent or delay the onset of dementia. The research, which analyzed data from over 11,000 participants, found that better cardiovascular health, as measured by factors like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, is associated with a lower risk of dementia. Specifically, the study showed that individuals with optimal cardiovascular health had a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia compared to those with poor heart health. This connection underscores the importance of maintaining good cardiovascular fitness through regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and managing conditions like hypertension and diabetes, which not only benefits heart health but also potentially protects cognitive function.
