The Spanish Fort Police Department in Alabama is facing a staffing crisis with only six officers, including the chief, currently on duty, leading to mandatory 12-hour shifts for the remaining officers. This shortage has been exacerbated by the departure of 10 officers since January, attributed to low pay and better opportunities elsewhere. The city council has approved a budget increase to raise starting salaries from $40,000 to $45,000 annually, and is considering further raises to $50,000 to attract new recruits. Chief John Barber expressed concerns about the sustainability of the current situation and the impact on officer morale and community safety, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the staffing shortfall.
