Associate Health Minister David Seymour said the review was difficult and painful, but ultimately necessary for Pharmac.
A major review of Pharmac, New Zealand's drug-buying agency, has concluded that its current approach is not suitable for meeting future health demands, particularly in managing the increasing burden of chronic diseases. The review, led by former health minister and Pharmac board member Dr. Lester Levy, recommends that Pharmac should expand its focus beyond just cost-effectiveness to consider broader health outcomes and equity. It suggests the establishment of a new entity, the Pharmaceutical and Devices Agency (PDA), to handle a wider range of treatments including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and vaccines. The review also calls for increased funding and a more collaborative approach with health professionals and patients to improve access to medicines and address health inequities.
