The Garda fitness test in Ireland has been modified to attract more applicants, particularly those who might not meet the previous stringent physical requirements. The new test, known as the "Practical Garda Fitness Assessment," focuses on functional fitness relevant to the job rather than just physical endurance. It includes tasks like a shuttle run, push-ups, an obstacle course, and a push-pull machine test, which simulate real-life scenarios a Garda might encounter. This change aims to make the force more inclusive, allowing a broader range of candidates to join, including those who might excel in other areas of policing but were previously excluded due to the physical demands of the old test. The adjustment comes as part of efforts to increase recruitment numbers and diversity within An Garda Síochána.
