The Garda fitness test in Ireland has been revised to make it more accessible, following feedback that the previous standards were too stringent and potentially discouraging for potential recruits. The new test, effective from the next recruitment campaign, now includes a shuttle run (beep test) where candidates must reach level 6.6, down from the previous requirement of level 8.8. Additionally, the test now incorporates a push-ups component, where men must complete 18 push-ups and women 12, replacing the former sit-up requirement. This change aims to better reflect the physical demands of modern policing, focusing on cardiovascular endurance and upper body strength. The modifications are part of an effort to widen the recruitment pool and ensure that the physical assessments are more relevant to the actual job requirements.
