  • Middle-aged and older adults with trouble seeing, hearing or both may face a higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack than those with good eyesight and hearing, according to a new study in China.

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal BMC Medicine which suggests that hearing and vision loss could increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke. Researchers from the University of Oxford analyzed data from over 430,000 participants in the UK Biobank and found that individuals with both hearing and vision impairments had a 50% higher risk of developing heart disease and a 40% higher risk of stroke compared to those without these impairments. The study proposes that sensory impairments might lead to reduced physical activity, social isolation, and depression, all of which are known risk factors for cardiovascular health. Furthermore, the article highlights the importance of regular eye and ear check-ups, especially as one ages, to potentially mitigate these risks through early intervention and management of sensory health.
