New Army fitness test includes gender-neutral benchmarks

The U.S. Army introduced a new fitness test with gender-neutral standards for combat roles, seeking to enforce uniform benchmarks.
The U.S. Army has introduced a new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) that has sparked debate over gender differences in physical performance. The ACFT, designed to better prepare soldiers for combat, includes six events: a three-repetition maximum deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, leg tuck or plank, and a two-mile run. Data from the test shows significant disparities between male and female soldiers, with men generally outperforming women. For instance, only 6 percent of women passed the leg tuck compared to 45 percent of men, and in the two-mile run, 85 percent of men passed compared to 55 percent of women. Critics argue that these differences could impact women's opportunities for promotion and assignment to certain units, while supporters believe the test accurately reflects the physical demands of combat. The Army is currently reviewing the test to ensure it is fair and effective for all soldiers.
