  • Body mass index (BMI) has long been considered flawed and imprecise. A newer metric, body roundness index (BRI) could be a simple tool that provides an estimation of body composition.

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a relatively new metric for assessing body fat distribution and health risks associated with obesity, introduced as an alternative to traditional measures like Body Mass Index (BMI). Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, BRI takes into account the waist circumference and height to provide a more accurate depiction of body shape and fat distribution. This index aims to better predict health outcomes related to obesity, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, by focusing on central obesity, which is known to be more harmful than overall body fat. The BRI formula involves complex calculations, making it less straightforward for everyday use but potentially more useful in clinical settings for assessing health risks. Research suggests that BRI might be superior in predicting metabolic syndrome and other obesity-related conditions compared to BMI, highlighting the importance of body shape in health assessments.
