The first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India was detected in an 8-month-old baby from Kerala, as reported by the Times of India. The infant, who was admitted to the hospital with severe respiratory issues, tested positive for HMPV after initial tests for other common respiratory viruses like influenza and RSV came back negative. HMPV, which can cause symptoms similar to the common cold or more severe respiratory infections, was confirmed through advanced diagnostic techniques at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). This detection marks a significant event as HMPV, although common globally, had not been previously identified in India, highlighting the need for enhanced surveillance and diagnostic capabilities for respiratory viruses in the country.
