  • Antibiotics, antivirals, vaccinations and anti-inflammatory medication are associated with reduced risk of dementia, according to new research that looked at health data from over 130 million individuals.

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology which suggests that the use of antibiotics, vaccinations, and anti-inflammatory medications could potentially lower the risk of developing dementia. The research, conducted by the University of Cambridge, analyzed data from over 400,000 individuals in the UK Biobank. It found that individuals who had received vaccinations, particularly the flu vaccine, had a 10% lower risk of dementia. Similarly, those who had taken antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs also showed a reduced risk. The study hypothesizes that these medications might help by reducing inflammation or infections, which are thought to contribute to dementia. However, the researchers caution that while there is an association, these findings do not establish causation, and more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and to confirm these effects.
