The smartwatch, launched in October 2022, was found to have a manufacturing defect where the backplate could detach, leading to overheating and subsequent burns. The CCI's investigation revealed that Google was aware of these defects but continued sales without adequate warnings or a recall, thereby violating consumer protection laws. This fine underscores the increasing scrutiny on tech giants to ensure product safety and transparency with consumers.
