Scientists Reveal the Exact Number of Steps to Walk to Live Longer
- New research shows how adding a little more physical activity to your day can extend your life, especially if you currently lead a more sedentary lifestyle.
The article from AOL discusses a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology which suggests that walking at least 3,967 steps per day can significantly reduce the risk of death from any cause, while 2,337 steps can start to decrease the risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases. The research, which analyzed data from 11 studies involving over 226,000 people from around the world, found that each additional 1,000 steps per day was associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of dying from any cause, and an increase of 500 steps per day linked to a 7% reduction in cardiovascular mortality. Notably, benefits were observed to continue increasing up to 20,000 steps, with no upper limit identified where the benefits plateaued. This suggests that even small increments in daily step counts can contribute to longevity and heart health, emphasizing the accessibility of walking as a form of exercise for improving public health.
