    • Community fluoridation - considered one of the top public health success stories of the last century - has been banned in Utah, with a new law taking effect Wednesday.

The Utah state legislature has passed a bill that bans the addition of fluoride to the public water supply, making it the first state in the U.S. to do so. The bill, which was passed by the Utah House of Representatives with a vote of 48-22, is now headed to the desk of Governor Spencer Cox for his signature. Proponents of the bill argue that adding fluoride to water is a form of forced medication, while opponents believe that fluoride is essential for preventing tooth decay. If signed into law, the ban would go into effect on July 1, 2023, and would apply to all public water systems in the state.
