Colombian government declares health emergency due to increase in yellow fever cases

  • Many people do not experience symptoms from the disease, while others experience fever, muscle pain, headache, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, according to the WHO. In most cases, symptoms disappear after three to four days.

The Colombian government has declared a health emergency in response to a significant increase in yellow fever cases, particularly in the departments of Meta and Caquetá. This declaration, made on December 20, 2023, aims to expedite the acquisition of vaccines and enhance epidemiological surveillance. The surge in cases, with 21 reported in 2023 compared to just three in 2022, has raised concerns about potential spread to other regions. The health ministry is urging residents in affected areas to get vaccinated and is working to ensure an adequate vaccine supply to curb the outbreak.
