  • University of Iowa researchers are recommending all patients be surveyed about their physical activity levels, after a new study underscores the link between physical activity and chronic disease.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine highlights the significant health benefits of an active lifestyle, revealing that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing 19 different chronic diseases. These conditions range from cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and stroke, to metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, and various cancers including breast, colon, and lung cancer. The research, which analyzed data from over 1.3 million participants, underscores that even moderate levels of exercise can lead to substantial health improvements. It suggests that engaging in activities like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming for at least 150 minutes per week can not only prevent these diseases but also enhance overall well-being, potentially reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of life.
