Liver transplant cures woman's bowel cancer in UK first

A woman in the UK, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer that had spread to her liver, underwent a pioneering treatment involving a liver transplant, marking the first such procedure in the UK for this condition. The 34-year-old patient, initially given a prognosis of just months to live, had her liver removed and replaced with a healthy donor liver in a complex operation at King's College Hospital in London. This was followed by a course of chemotherapy to target any remaining cancer cells. The innovative approach was taken because traditional treatments like surgery or chemotherapy alone were not viable options due to the extent of the cancer's spread. Post-surgery, the patient has shown no signs of cancer recurrence, highlighting a potential new avenue for treating advanced bowel cancer cases where conventional methods fail.
