The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the use of Red Dye No. 3 in food products due to its potential carcinogenic effects, following decades of warnings about its health risks. This decision was influenced by a 1990 study linking the dye to thyroid tumors in rats, although it was only recently that the FDA took decisive action. Red Dye No. 3, also known as Erythrosine, has been used in various food items like candies, beverages, and baked goods to impart a bright pink or red color. Besides cancer risks, the dye has been associated with behavioral issues in children, including hyperactivity, and other health concerns like allergies and immune system effects. The ban does not extend to its use in cosmetics and drugs, where it remains permissible. This move reflects a growing awareness and regulatory response to the potential dangers of synthetic food dyes, prompting calls for natural alternatives in food coloring.
