Study uncovers psychological profiles associated with mental and brain health in middle-aged and older adults

The research, conducted by a team from the University of Cambridge, identified five distinct psychological profiles: 'controlled' (high in self-control and low in impulsivity), 'reserved' (low in emotional instability and extraversion), 'confident' (high in self-esteem and optimism), 'impulsive' (high in impulsivity and sensation seeking), and 'anxious' (high in anxiety and emotional instability). These profiles were associated with different mental health outcomes; for instance, the 'confident' profile was linked to better mental health, while the 'anxious' and 'impulsive' profiles were associated with poorer mental health and cognitive function. The study utilized data from over 1,200 participants from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN) and highlighted the potential for personalized mental health interventions based on these profiles.
