  • Thurston County Health Officer Dimyana Abdelmalek announced she is departing her role in early March. She shared the news at the end of Board of Health meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.

Dr. Dimie Ogoina, who has served as Thurston County's Health Officer since 2019, has announced his departure to return to his home country, Nigeria, to be closer to his family. During his tenure, he navigated the county through significant public health challenges including the global COVID-19 pandemic, the opioid crisis, and issues related to homelessness. His leadership was marked by efforts to enhance community health services, promote health equity, and foster partnerships across various sectors. Dr. Ogoina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted the collaborative spirit of Thurston County in addressing public health issues. The Thurston County Board of Health is now in the process of finding an interim health officer to ensure continuity in public health services.
