  • Five students of school at Kalamassery in Kerala show symptoms of viral meningitis. Here's what you need to know about the ailment.

Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, primarily caused by enteroviruses, though other viruses like mumps, herpes simplex virus, and West Nile virus can also be culprits. Symptoms often include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and a stiff neck, but can vary in severity. While it's less severe than bacterial meningitis, it still requires medical attention. Diagnosis typically involves a lumbar puncture to analyze cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms since there's no specific cure for viral meningitis; this includes rest, hydration, and pain relief with over-the-counter medications. In severe cases, hospitalization might be necessary for supportive care like IV fluids or antiviral drugs if a specific virus like herpes is identified. Most people recover within 7 to 10 days, though some might experience lingering symptoms like fatigue or headaches. Prevention involves good hygiene practices, vaccinations where applicable, and avoiding contact with infected individuals.
