Science Says We Age Faster Twice During Our Lifetime. Here's When It Happens
- We tend to think of aging as a steady, linear process. But recent research reveals that there are two instances in our lifetime in which we age faster.
The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism which suggests that humans experience two significant periods of accelerated aging during their lifetime. The first occurs during puberty, where the body undergoes rapid physical changes, and the second happens around age 34, when biological aging speeds up again. This research, led by scientists from Duke University, utilized data from the Dunedin Study, which has followed over 1,000 individuals since their birth in 1972-73 in Dunedin, New Zealand. The study measured various health markers to assess biological age, revealing that these periods of faster aging might be linked to changes in metabolism, immune function, and other physiological processes. The findings imply that these stages could be critical times for interventions to potentially slow down the aging process.
