  • R oughly a quarter of people worldwide, and 15 percent of Americans, use a smartwatch or fitness tracker, according to Demandsage, and those numbers are expected to keep growing.

A recent study published in the journal *Environmental Science & Technology* has revealed that smartwatches and fitness trackers contain high levels of "forever chemicals," specifically per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals, known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks, were found in concentrations up to 10,000 times higher than in other electronic devices. The study tested 39 devices from 20 brands, including popular models like the Apple Watch and Fitbit, and found that PFAS are used in the waterproofing materials of these devices. The presence of these chemicals raises concerns about potential exposure to users, although the exact health implications remain under investigation. The findings underscore the need for manufacturers to explore safer alternatives to PFAS in their products.
