Heavy metals lead and cadmium detected in protein powders; highest amount in these varieties

A recent study has revealed concerning levels of heavy metals, specifically lead and cadmium, in various protein powders available in the market. The research, conducted by a team of scientists, found that some protein powders contained significantly higher amounts of these toxic metals than others. Notably, plant-based protein powders, particularly those derived from rice and soy, showed the highest concentrations of lead and cadmium. This contamination is attributed to the soil in which these plants are grown, which can naturally contain or be polluted with heavy metals. The study suggests that while occasional use might not pose a significant health risk, regular consumption could lead to heavy metal accumulation in the body, potentially causing health issues like kidney damage, bone weakening, and neurological problems. Consumers are advised to be cautious and consider the source and type of protein powder they use, opting for products with lower metal content or diversifying their protein sources.
