Study reveals hidden 'forever chemicals' in smartwatch and fitness tracker bands
- A study from the University of Notre Dame has revealed that premium smartwatch bands made from fluoroelastomer contain toxic PFAS, chemicals linked to serious health issues. These substances can accumulate in the body over time,
A recent study has uncovered the presence of "forever chemicals," specifically per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in the wristbands of smartwatches and fitness trackers. These chemicals, known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks, were found in 97% of the 180 wristbands tested, which included materials like rubber, plastic, and leather from various brands. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, highlighted that these PFAS are used to enhance the durability and water resistance of the bands. The findings raise concerns about the long-term exposure to these substances, which have been linked to health issues like cancer, liver damage, and developmental effects in children. The research suggests a need for greater transparency from manufacturers regarding the materials used in wearable technology and calls for regulatory measures to limit PFAS use in consumer products.
