New Report Finds Lead and Cadmium in Protein Powders. How Much Should You Worry?
- Fact checked by Nick Blackmer A new report found higher-than-acceptable levels of the harmful metals cadmium and lead in many protein powders.Organic, plant-based, and chocolate-flavored protein powders had the highest levels of contamination.
A recent report by Consumer Reports has raised concerns about the presence of heavy metals like lead and cadmium in various protein powders. The study tested 30 protein powders and drinks, revealing that many contained these contaminants, which can pose health risks if consumed in high amounts over time. While the levels found were generally below the limits set by California's Proposition 65, which requires warning labels for products containing certain levels of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm, the presence of these metals is still a concern. Experts suggest that while occasional use might not be harmful, regular consumption, especially in large quantities, could contribute to health issues like kidney damage, hypertension, and reduced fertility. The report advises consumers to be cautious, particularly those who might be more vulnerable such as pregnant women, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. It recommends choosing products with lower levels of these contaminants and considering dietary variety to minimize exposure.
