  • New research finds toxins used to make some brands of smart watch wrist straps are able to seep through the skin

A recent study published in the journal "Environment International" has raised concerns about the presence of toxic "forever chemicals" in smart watch bands. These chemicals, known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), are notorious for their persistence in the environment and the human body, potentially leading to health issues like cancer, liver damage, and immune system effects. The research, conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, and the Green Science Policy Institute, tested 47 wristbands from various brands and found that 100% of the bands made from synthetic materials like rubber, silicone, and plastic contained PFAS. Notably, even some bands from well-known brands like Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit were found to have these chemicals. The study suggests that these chemicals can migrate from the bands into the skin, posing a direct exposure risk to users. This finding underscores the need for manufacturers to reconsider the materials used in wearable technology to minimize health risks associated with PFAS exposure.
