The research, conducted by scientists from the University of California, San Diego, and other institutions, showed that higher levels of PM2.5 were associated with reduced performance in tasks requiring sustained attention and increased difficulty in regulating emotions. Participants exposed to polluted air exhibited slower reaction times and reported feeling more anxious or depressed. The study suggests that air pollution might contribute to mental health issues by affecting brain areas responsible for attention and emotional control, highlighting the need for better air quality management to protect public health.
