Exercise and eating better prior to surgery cuts complication risks - study

A study published in the journal Surgery has found that engaging in regular exercise and improving diet quality before undergoing surgery can significantly reduce the risk of postoperative complications. The research, which analyzed data from over 500,000 patients, showed that individuals who adhered to a healthy lifestyle, including at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly, along with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, experienced fewer complications such as infections, blood clots, and respiratory issues. The study suggests that these lifestyle changes could be as impactful as other known risk factors like smoking cessation or diabetes management in improving surgical outcomes.
