Researchers debunk common belief that women get better muscles by timing their workouts to their menstrual cycles

New research from kinesiologists at McMaster University is challenging the internet belief that timing resistance training to specific phases of the menstrual cycle boosts the body's ability to build muscle and strength.

The article from MSN discusses a study that challenges the common belief that women can optimize muscle gains by timing their workouts according to their menstrual cycle phases. Traditionally, it was thought that women should adjust their exercise intensity based on hormonal fluctuations, with lighter workouts during menstruation and heavier during ovulation. However, the research, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found no significant differences in muscle strength or hypertrophy when women adhered to a consistent training schedule regardless of their menstrual cycle phase. The study involved 51 women who followed a 10-week resistance training program, and the results indicated that muscle growth and strength improvements were similar across all phases of the menstrual cycle. This suggests that women do not need to alter their training intensity or volume based on their menstrual cycle to achieve muscle gains, promoting a more straightforward approach to fitness training for women.
