  • A study led by University of Warwick Professor Jianfeng Feng has found that regularly sleeping too little is associated with depression and brain loss in emotion areas, while sleeping too long is associated with cognitive decline and degenerative diseases.

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal *Sleep* which explores the health implications of different sleep patterns. The research, involving over 63,000 participants from the UK Biobank, found that individuals with irregular sleep patterns, such as those who are either night owls or early birds, face increased health risks compared to those with regular sleep schedules. Specifically, people who sleep less than seven or more than nine hours, or those who have inconsistent sleep times, are at a higher risk for developing conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues. The study highlights that while both short and long sleep durations are problematic, the irregularity in sleep timing might be particularly detrimental. It suggests that maintaining a consistent sleep schedule could be beneficial for long-term health, emphasizing the importance of not just the quantity but also the regularity of sleep.
