Bad news for extreme exercise junkies out there: too much vigorous exercise could temporarily make your immune system less efficient.

A recent study published in the journal Current Biology has identified a potential downside to vigorous exercise that was previously unknown: it may temporarily impair the immune system's ability to fight off infections. The research, conducted on mice, found that intense physical activity can cause a significant reduction in the function of certain immune cells, specifically cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells, which are crucial for combating viral infections and cancer. This effect was observed to last for several hours after the exercise, suggesting that individuals engaging in strenuous workouts might be more susceptible to infections during this period. The study's findings highlight the importance of balancing exercise intensity with adequate rest and recovery to maintain optimal immune function.
