The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet is designed to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms of autoimmune diseases by eliminating foods that might trigger inflammation or immune responses. According to dietitian Lauren Manaker, who has tried the diet, AIP involves an elimination phase where foods like grains, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshade vegetables, and processed foods are removed from the diet. Instead, it focuses on nutrient-dense foods such as meats, fish, vegetables (excluding nightshades), fruits, and certain oils like olive and coconut oil. After a period, foods are slowly reintroduced to identify specific triggers. Manaker notes that while the diet can be restrictive and challenging to follow, it has potential benefits like reducing symptoms of autoimmune conditions, improving gut health, and decreasing overall inflammation. However, she emphasizes the importance of consulting with healthcare providers before starting such a diet due to its restrictive nature and the need for personalized guidance.
