This Diet May Help People with Diabetes Lose Visceral Fat and Sleep Better, New Study Suggests

A recent study published in the journal Nutrients suggests that adopting a Mediterranean diet can significantly benefit individuals with Type 2 diabetes by reducing visceral fat and improving sleep quality. The study involved 121 participants who followed either a Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet for 12 weeks. Those on the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, and includes moderate amounts of fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy, experienced a notable decrease in visceral fat, which is the dangerous fat surrounding internal organs. Additionally, this group reported better sleep quality, likely due to the diet's anti-inflammatory effects and its potential to stabilize blood sugar levels, thereby reducing sleep disturbances. The Mediterranean diet's emphasis on healthy fats and whole foods over processed items also contributes to overall metabolic health, making it a recommended dietary approach for managing diabetes and related health issues.
