  • New research has revealed that individuals who have suffered a stroke, as well as those with heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, have increased odds of developing depression. Additionally, individuals with sleep problems also face a higher likelihood of experiencing depression.

The article from MSN discusses a study published in the journal *General Psychiatry* which explores the relationship between chronic diseases, sleep problems, and depression. The research, involving over 8,000 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, found that sleep disturbances act as a mediator between chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, and the development of depression. Specifically, the study showed that individuals with chronic conditions are more likely to experience sleep issues, which in turn increase the risk of depression. The findings suggest that addressing sleep problems could be a key strategy in preventing or managing depression in patients with chronic illnesses. The study highlights the importance of sleep in the context of overall health, particularly mental health, and calls for integrated approaches in treating chronic diseases to also consider sleep quality.
